TSU's Beta Omicron Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. plan to unveil a monument on campus that commemorates the chapter's 75th anniversary during this year's Homecoming activities. In addition to a Nov. 7 monument dedication, chapter members have scheduled a collection of social and formal events, including a midday happy hour, celebration dinner, dedication reception and tailgate. TSU's National Alumni Association has launched its "Million Dollar Challenge", a charge to increase alumni giving and raise at least one million dollars by 2012. Additionally, TSU's University Relations and Development division implemented the "2012 Change for Change" campaign, an effort to increase the amount of faculty and staff philanthropic dollars. University officials released a Nov. 4 crime alert to students, faculty and staff concerning a Nov. 3 brawl and related Nov. 2 robbery on campus. TSU Police said the incident is being investigated as an aggravated assault. Following a call to Metro-Nashville Police alleging that shots had been fired on campus, authorities quickly rushed to the scene, determining a group of students had assaulted one of two black males suspected of committing a robbery in the FPCC the previous night. The search for the Tigers' 22nd head football coach is under way, after university officials decided James Webster would not be returning next season, according to sources close to the athletic department and reports by Nashville's Newschannel 5. After an exciting fourth season at the helm of a Tigers program that hasn't won a Conference title since 1999, Webster stands to shoulder the blame for the sub-par record the Tigers have posted in the 2009 season--only winning three games, including only one home victory which came to the 1-win Southeastern State Missouri University Redhawks. The Graduate Invitation & Novelty Company, founded by two TSU alumni in 2002, has created its first ever "The Real World Scholarship" contest for graduating seniors. The $500 cash scholarship, awarded each semester, serves as a rewarding incentive to graduating seniors to consider their futures and decide how they plan to use their degrees. (1) comment
The Homecoming planning committee has selected Thomas E. Gaiter Sr. for grand marshal and Homer R. Wheaton for honoree. Gaiter, the Residency Training Program Director and Chief of the Division of Family Medicine at Howard University Hospital, received his bachelor's degree in biology from TSU in 1979. (0) comments
