The trendy clothing line Miss Sixty has introduced the first anti-cellulite clothing product, the Extra Low Ty “Anti Cellulite” Treated Trousers. The trousers are cellulite-fighting jeans that have a special scientific construction that helps reduce the appearance of cellulite.
Webster’s Dictionary defines cellulite as “lumpy fat found in the thighs, hips and/or buttocks of some women.” The anti-cellulite jeans have microscopic capsules of retinol which break open with the friction of the fabric against the skin. Retinol is one of the many ingredients used by cosmetic agencies to fight cellulite.
“I seriously doubt that these jeans would get rid of cellulite,” said Jonathan Hoskins, TSU graduate and current Meharry Medical School student. “What helps you get rid of fat is adequate diet and exercise.
The anti-cellulite jeans have not yet been clinically proven to work. According to Hoskins, the best way to get rid of cellulite is to begin a regular workout routine. Since cellulite is the collection of fat, the fat must be loosened with a rigorous workout regiment before it can be lost. Yet many women who suffer from cellulite still search for a quick means to reduce the appearance of cellulite.
The anti-cellulite jeans can be found at misssixty.com, shopbop.com or in major department stores like Rich’s and Bloomingdale’s. Although the $119-pair jeans could be expensive for some pockets, the jeans are cheaper than the average liposuction surgery that ranges between $2,500 and $7000, depending on the areas of removal.
A common misconception of women with cellulite is they have to be overweight or suffer from obesity to have it. According to the American Medical Directors Association women of all sizes and weights can have cellulite. The anti-cellulite jeans are straight legged and extremely fitted with 98 percent Cotton and two percent Elastane, but these jeans do not come in sizes over 12.
“I don’t agree with the fact that the jeans don’t come in sizes larger than 12,” said Chasseney Lewis, a senior from Sipsey, Ala. majoring in Speech Pathology and Audiology. “The jeans should be created for the people who need them the most.”
For those who opt to order the jeans on-line, they can be returned within 21 days or three weeks for a full credit card refund or exchanged if there are any fitting problems, but will not be accepted if the jeans have been worn, tailored or washed. Shopbop.com will also pay any additional costs if an exchange is made.
The Group’s Fashionworld division of the National Purchase Diary tracks fashion industry trends and states about 21 percent of the $200 billion apparel and shoes market includes “enhanced features” such as those found in the anti-cellulite jeans. These features include anything from wrinkle- free products, odor resistant materials and the new anti-cellulite fabrics. The 21 percent of the market that includes these enhanced features is expected to rise to 50 percent by 2010.
“If the jeans could be proven to work through clinical research, I think they could be a good idea,” Lewis said. “Maybe creative inventions like these will keep people from taking dangerous pills or supplements to fight cellulite.”•
