Grambling State coaching legend passes away

Eddie Robinson, the long-time head football coach ofthe Grambling State University, passed away on Tuesday, April 3.

Robinson was also the first black college head football coach.

Robinson had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

Robinson coached at Grambling from (1951-1997) and hada record of 408-165-11, which included 17 conferencetitles and eight black college championships. He was also the first coach ever to win 400 games.

In his 55-year career, he coached over 200 players that went to the NFL.

McLendon and Barnett to be inducted to Hall of Fame

TSU basketball legends John McClendon and Dick Barnettare scheduled to be inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City,Mo., on Nov. 18, 2007.

McLendon was the first black college basketball coach and professional coach.

He is under the Kansas coaching tree, which was headedby James Naismith, who is credited as the inventor of the game of basketball.

In McClendon's 25 years of coaching, he won eight CIAA titles and three NAIA titles. McLendon won three straight NAIA championships with the Big Blue from 1957-59.

He is known for being the inventor of the fast break.

McLendon was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1979.

Barnett led the Tigers to three straight championships from 1957-59.

Barnett was named MVP of the NAIA championship in 1958 and 59.

Drafted by NBA team Syracuse Nationals in 1959,Barnett played in the NBA from 1959-1974; he also played for the Los Angles Lakers and New York Knicks.Barnett won two championships with the Knicks. In 2006, he was inducted in the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame.

Tigers volleyball inks two

TSU Volleyball signed two players to fill holes. The Tigers signed Candace Saleaumua and Christian Lowe.

Saleaumua is a 5-6 setter from National City, Ca. Sheis coming to Big Blue Country from Missouri State University where, as a freshman, she was second team All-American and, as a sophomore, she was first teamAll-American.

Christian Lowe is a 6-foot middle blocker and outsidehitter from San Antonio. She attended Saint Petersburg College.

Lowe is a two-time all first team conference performer. As a freshman, she was number one in thenation in blocks with 2.39 a game.

Also in her freshman year she set the single seasonrecord for blocks in a game with 17 and blocks in aseason with 200. In her sophomore season, she brokeher record for blocks in a game with 23 in a game.

Tigers finish 14th

The TSU Tigers golf team finished 14th in the Bradford Creek Incollegiate, which was hosted by Eastern Carolina University.

Sophomore Adam Gruber had an impressive tournament shooting a 5 under par, 209, for a sixth place finish. The Tigers will return to the greens on April 9-10,when they host the TSU Invitational.
