Students, faculty go right with Writing Center

As the spring semester nears a close and some students attack finalresearch papers and reports, the TSU Writing Center is conductingworkshops for those in need of enhancing their writing skills.

The remaining workshops are scheduled for Tuesday, April 17, at 1 p.m.and Wednesday, April 18, at 2 p.m.

The program, located in room 300 of the Learning Resource Center, is asupport program that supplements instruction for writing courses aswell as in other courses in the university.

"I always go to the writing center for their workshops because youwill never know everything about writing," said Jonathan Mariner, ajunior mechanical engineering major from Memphis.

Each semester, the Writing Center offers workshops on various topics,including revising and editing, grammar and mechanics, and sentencestructure.

These workshops are open to students and university faculty and mayalso be designed and presented at the special request of instructors.

In the past, these workshops have focused on such topics as preparingfor standardized writing tests, taking essay tests, writing thetechnical report, and writing the research paper.

"I believe these workshops are very beneficial to not only thestudents but faculty as well," said Michael Turner, an Englishdirector and faculty member within the remedial and developmentalstudies department. "By conducting these workshops, it shows whoreally wants to accomplish more outside the classroom."

Student participants have access to computerized tutorials through theWriting Center or the Tutorial Computer Lab, which Turner manages.This lab is open to all students and faculty seeking assistance incompleting labs for reading or writing, as well as those seekinggeneral computer skills.

The Writing Center operates Monday-Friday, according to the postedschedule posted in the Center, and all individual sessions are byappointments and each session lasts for 50 minutes.

"I went to all three workshops and I really got a one-on-oneexperience about using commas," said Ashley McKinly, a freshman sportsscience major from Lexington, Ky.
