After much complaint about student apathy at TSU, a group of students took it upon themselves to start a school spirit campaign.
"The campaign idea stemmed from a class discussion in my Honors Leadership Special Topics course instructed by Mr. William Latham in regards to student apathy," said "I Love TSU" campaign coordinator and Miss TSU 2006-2007 Dairenetta Spain. "Something needed to be done in order to encourage our fellow students to take ownership in every entity of TSU, especially athletics."
The purpose of the campaign is to cultivate a collaborative effort between TSU student organizations and TSU's Student Athletic Advisory Committee. Together, they aim to promote school spirit and student enthusiasm while promoting a visual representation of the support of the Big Blue.
"This can be done primarily through a more personalized approach of marketing such as dorm runs, Facebook Ads and student-athlete sponsored events," Spain said.
Out of the 710 shirts with "I Love TSU" printed on them ordered, 308 of them were passed out to different organizations on Monday, Oct. 22 to start the campaign.
Daniel Hibbert, co-chair and Greek representative for the campaign, is enthused about efforts of the initiative.
"We want to see a sea of blue in the Homecoming game," Hibbert said. "I have never seen this amount of students with this much spirit."
Amanda Deberry, a representative from WTST, one of the sponsors of the campaign, is hopeful for the "I Love TSU" project.
"I think it really needs to happen," Deberry said. "Last year, it wasn't promoted very well and with this campaign, way more students will be involved."
However, Deberry is concerned about the participation at the different sporting events, especially for Homecoming. A prospective December 2007 graduate, she wants to make sure that "I Love TSU" lasts for years to come.
"I'm worried about (the Homecoming game). Are people actually going to wear (their shirts) or are (students) just coming out to get a free tee-shirt?"

As alumni of TSU...this is a Great Idea...We need to wear out colors to the game more. We also should support the TSU bookstore, which has the best TSU clothing ever. (Continued…)

I believe the "I Love TSU" theme is a wonderful idea to promote spirit and enthusiasm for athlectics. Student support of the TSU athletic programs is greatly needed at a much higher level. (Continued…)
