Issue date: 2/4/08 Section: Campus News
TSU President Melvin N. Johnson signed the bylaws and constitution for the university's Staff Senate in history on Jan. 24, finalizing what had been a two-year undertaking for Staff Senate President Debra Alexander and other staff members.
In a celebration that followed shortly after, Alexander was overcome with tears, excited and relieved.
"I was really excited," Alexander said. "We fought long and hard for this. This was something very important for us."
Alexander said that now that the bylaws are in place, the Senate has plans to help with student recruitment and be more interactive with current students.
She also said they plan to host elections for next year's officers in the coming months.

Schwarzenegger endorses McCain
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced Jan. 31 that he is endorsing Republican presidential candidate John McCain.
The announcement was made at a solar technology company in Los Angeles, a day after the four Republican candidates debated at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif.
McCain is also expected to be endorsed by two Republican Georgia senators, Johnny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss.
Killer sentenced to life
Gary Hilton, accused of murdering Meredith Emerson, plead guilty on Thursday and was sentenced to life in prison.
Hilton was charged with kidnapping with intent to harm and malice in Emerson's death on Jan. 4.
Emerson, who was a 24-year-old graduate of the University of Georgia, disappeared on New Year's Day while hiking with her dog.
Hilton led authorities to her body in order to avoid the death penalty. Emerson's parents feel as if no punishment is too great for Hilton.
