These Global Positioning Systems(GPS) put to practical use a technology that was thought only to be beneficial to military personnel, campers and other outdoorsmen.
It's not to say that the main motivation
for GPS was not beneficial.
For centuries, navigators and explorers searched for a system that would enable them to locate their position on the globe with the accuracy necessary to avoid tragedy and to reach their intended destinations.
The invention of the GPS system was accidental because the technology used to comprise this system came from physicists who were looking to answer many mysteries of the universe.
As a result they were forced to create timepieces that were accurate within the billionth of a second.
This, along with other advancements in engineering helped to pave the way for this tech to happen.
Today GPS is saving lives, helping society in countless other ways and generating 100,000 jobs in a multibillion-dollar industry.
Anyone who looks into GPS systems will come to find that in just a few short years, the applications for them are only bound by our imagination.
They can be used by emergency vehicles to pinpoint destinations and map their routes or locate vessels that are lost at sea.
UPS uses GPS keep track of their fleet and shipping.
Just as much, civilian pilots need use GPS for navigation, crop-dusting, aerial photography, and surveying.
GPS systems are also being used in many automobiles today. As society continues to change and information becomes necessary to obtain quickly GPS systems will continue to
grow and evolve in their applications
and uses.•
