Sony to begin offering Blu-ray drives for X-Box
Issue date: 3/24/08 Section: Business
There may be some truth to the rumors that Sony and Microsoft are developing a Blu-ray player for the Xbox 360 now that the format war is over.
According to an article on engadget.com, Stan Glasgow, Sony Electronics U.S. President, said, "Sony is in talks with console rival Microsoft about offering a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360."
The development of a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360 could hurt sales of Sony's Playstation 3, as one of the console's main selling points is the ability to play Blu-ray movies. PS3 has consistently been one of the cheapest most reliable Blu-ray players on the market, and consequently one of the most popular. Sales totaled 1.2 million units during the Christmas holiday selling period.
Glasgow also pointed out that Sony is also in talks with Apple to develop a Blu-ray player, with which none of their non-computer devices would be compatible. As of now, no speculative release date has been offered.
'Smash' game sets Nintendo records
Nintendo of America announced last Monday that Super Smash Bros. Brawl has become the fastest-selling game in the
company's long history.
More than 1.4 million gamers have purchased the fighter since
its release on March 9, according to the publisher.
Approximately 874,000 people, meanwhile, bought the game on the first day. Nintendo added that Brawl has sold at a rate of approximately 120 units per minute since it shipped.
"Super Smash Bros. Brawl has made the leap from video game to cultural phenomenon," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales and marketing.
"Game reviewers and the public alike praise its fun game play and extensive, inventive content.
"It's important to remember," Dunaway continued, "that we have lots more fun on the way: Upcoming titles like Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit will keep our momentum going strong."
