John Miglietta, a history professor, coached the club to victory in 2007, winning the 18th annual Honda Challenge.
"I was very proud after we won the national championship," Miglietta said. "The students worked very hard, players had been planning several years for that moment."
The Honda Challenge is a competition between students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Students are to answer questions on world history, science, literature, religion, the arts, social sciences, popular culture and African American history.
Andrian Cheatham, a junior psychology major from Seattle said he enjoys being a part of the Honda Team.
"I think (being on the team) a great opportunity to learn and represent the school," Cheatham said.
Ismalia Badjie, a senior chemistry major from the Gambia, West Africa is the captain of the team.
Badjie has been a member of the Honda Campus team since his freshman year and has been consistently involved up through his junior/senior year when he made the national team.
"For me, being on the national champion team last year was definitely one of my biggest accomplishments while here at TSU," Badjie said. "Even though last year was my first year at nationals, I was always able to compete in many regional tournaments throughout the nation, which gave me a lot of good exposure and an opportunity to meet new people."
"Another great aspect of our win at nationals last year was that all my teammates," he continued. "David Macias, Dwayne Morrow, Larry Cook and Milton Rice had all invested a lot of time and effort in Honda competing in previous years. Winning the championship last year at nationals made the experience even better."
One of the main reasons Badjie came to TSU was because of the Honda Campus team. Badjie's older brother Malick Badjie was captain in 2003.
Badjie gives credit to his brother for exposing him to the game even before he was in college.
