Issue date: 4/7/08 Section: Campus News
TSU's award winning forensics team was ranked third in the country at the International Forensics Tournament held in London, March 15-18.
"I think it is wonderful that they did well," said Christopher Garner, a junior mass communications major from Oak Park, Ill., and member of the forensics team. "This gives me a better insight."
Only three out the eight members of the team traveled to London to compete: Clarence Ball, a senior speech communications major from Houston; Darius Montgomery, a senior architectural engineering major from Humboldt, Tenn.; and LaVita Tuff, a senior English major from Atlanta.
"I am delighted, but not surprised that our forensics team did such an exceptional job while away in London," said Vice
President for Student Affairs Michael Freeman."This proves that TSU has some of the finest students in the nation."
TSU will play host to the National Forensics Association Championship Tournament April 18-21.
Prison guard helps inmates escape
Amber Lynn Goff, a former prison guard accused of helping two inmates escape, plead guilty Friday to a federal firearms charge in exchange for reduced charges and a recommendation by prosecutors for a five-year prison term and three years probation. She also agreed to pay $11,000 in restitution.
Goff said she was blinded by love after being in a romantic relationship with one of the two prisoners who escaped from the jail. Goff was indicted last November for helping the prisoners escape and the three suspects were apprehended in Grants, New Mexico.
Students die in fire
Three University of Wisconsin students died in a house fire that occurred early Saturday morning.
When emergency officials arrived at the home located in Menomonie, Wis., smoke was already coming from the basement, first and second floors.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
