As of press time, the Democrats were a scant nine seats away from gaining a 3/5 majority in the Senate, which would effectively give them the power to end filibusters.

The party already has already won control of the Senate, with the absolute minimum majority of 51 seats filled. Projections from CNN.com give the Democrats five seats, bringing their total to 56.

Five states changed their leadership from Republican to Democratic song. New Mexico, Colorado, Virginia, North Carolina and New Hampshire are the swing states that really made the difference.

Four of the seats in the Senate are still open, but not up for grabs during this election. They will be decided upon in December.
