American politics are funny.

The same year African American voting rights were up for renewal; a black man was elected the next president.
This country has come a long way, and we still have a long way to go.

Progress cannot end with the election of a black president. In fact, true "progress" is just beginning.

In recent years, Black America has gained an unusually large amount of respect from its white counterparts.

Economically, socially and politically we have come along way. However, we still have a ways to go.

I believe that black people have been playing catch up and fighting for respect.

During slavery and up until the Civil Rights Movement black people lost a lot of time.

While white America spent time building wealth through corporations and businesses, minorities were struggling to make a name for themselves.

I believe valuable time was also lost when America was forming our system of government.

When judicial systems, state legislators and governing bodies were being formed, our voices were muffled amongst it all.

Although this time was lost, we must use the time we have now wisely.

The dynamics of American politics are changing, and it is up to our generation to uphold the concept of equal rights.

Even though the struggle for civil rights has lessened greatly, minorities are still working toward more respect in the work place and socially, in some instances.

There are many stereotypes both good and bad that are placed on not only black people but all minorities.

Maybe now that we have a black family in the White House some of those stereotypes will be buried. Not every black father is a deadbeat dad and not all black women have some kind of angry deposition.

There is a lot of pressure on the new first family, but I believe that they can stand the test of time; especially if they continue to have the support of America.
We have come a long way and we cannot stop now.•
