This semester was a roll coaster ride.
Our university as well as the nation experienced plenty of highs and lows this year. With a shaky economy and dwindling resources for gas, money and food few people are able to avoid hardships.

Our university was not excluded from budget cuts and tuition increases. It may have taken some major deficits to occur first, but maybe more people, organizations and companies will give money to the university to prevent history from repeating itself next semester.

Maybe next year disgruntled students and parents will not scorn alumni for not giving back to university but instead encourage them to contribute. Hopefully student, faculty relations will improve as well.

Besides monetary and administrative adjustments, the student body experienced a lot of changes as well. In the Nov. 24 issue of The Meter, an article explained new rules for students that potentially wanted to become king and queen of the university.

These changes may have come as a shock for some students, but at least now we can vote for Mr. TSU who serves as the king of the university.

Another change that students faced was the blocking of a popular gossip Web site. There are mixed feelings about this discussion because visiting juicycampus.com on campus is no longer an option. Now the Web site's founder thinks that the university has taken away students freedom of speech rights.

Although our campus was plagued with some misfortune mishaps; there are some good things that we experienced this semester that will help to make our university stronger.

TSU's light shone bright when our Freedom Rider 14, were awarded honorary degrees at a special convocation for them.

This was a true highlight of the semester as thousands of students watched a historic moment take place. The Freedom Riders paved the way for current students and we should remember how far we have come.

When Barack Obama was elected as the next U.S president in November, I saw a new friendship among students. Recognizing our demographic and that the city of Nashville voted democratic, I think many TSU students voted for the first black president.

In fact, it became clear that many TSU students voted when more than 2,000 students gathered to march down Jefferson Street to celebrate his victory.

With the semester finally coming to an end we have a lot of events and moments to look forward to: graduations, the presidential inauguration, Student Election Commission week campaigns and much more.

During the winter break take sometime to reflect and refuel so next semester will be an even better one. •
