It is officially spring and Earth Day is April 22.

Earth Day is a day dedicated to caring for the earth by planting a tree, preserving the earth or the act of "going green."

The recession, global warming and loss of natural resources are issues the planet Earth are forced to deal with, but with teamwork and effort there are small steps that can be taken to help preserve the planet.

Below are a few simple ways to help save the planet:

Turn off TVs, laptops, radio and lamps before bedtime & remove plugs from sockets while appliances are not in use.
This will help preserve energy and take a few bucks off the utility bill.

Use paper bags or eco-friendly bags.
Places such as Whole Foods, Walmart and Walgreens have these bags and are great to use instead of plastic bags while shopping.

This eliminates the worry of storing tons of plastic bags and plastic is being preserved.

Recycle cans and water bottles.
Aluminum and plastic are nonrenewable resources and can be easily preserved by simply rinsing out soda cans and water bottles and dropping off them in a recycling box on or off campus.

Recycling bins on campus are located behind Wilma Rudolph Hall.

Reuse computer/notebook paper.
Use old computer paper and notebook paper as scrap paper for math problems, a to-do list or notes for class.

Save the trouble of buying new notebooks every semester and put leftover paper to use instead of throwing it away.

Carpool, use public transportation, or ride a bike.
One less vehicle on the road means less air pollution. This will also save gas money.

Park and walk to each class instead of driving around campus.
This will save gas money, prevent air pollution and promote a healthy lifestyle by exercising.

Don't let water run while brushing and flossing teeth.
It will save on water bills to wait until after flossing to turn it on. Less water is being wasted.

Reuse plastic containers from leftover takeout meals as storage containers.
Use them as storage containers for erasers, thumbtacks, magnets or loose change.

Use fluorescent light bulbs.
They may be more expensive than incandescent bulbs, but they will last much longer, which will save money and a trip to buy new bulbs once they blow out.

Plant a tree.
Give back to the community by planting a tree in the park or at the local recreation center.

Use energy saving products.
Apple Macbooks are designed especially for energy preservation.

Some features are the Macbook which includes a mercury-free LED backlight displays, arsenic-free glass, recycleable aluminum and glass enclosure.

Hewlett Packard also carries ENERGY STAR qualified laptop and desktop PC's, which use 75 percent less energy in "sleep" mode.

Use environmentally friendly cleaning products. When cleaning dorm rooms and apartments remember these products as many are biodegradable. Some are plant-based cleaners with natural ingredients to get the job done.

There are many Web sites available for more information on how to go green.
