SGA leaders fail to make the grade

After a long campaign season and exhausting summer preparation, Student Government's top officials find their work in vain. SGA President and Vice-President Elects have been relinquished from their positions due to an untimely notice of academics.

"Basically, I lost my priorities and did not put academics first," said senior political science major and SGA Vice President elect from Macon, Ga, Danny Glover.

According to the TSU Student Handbook and SGA Constitution, all student elects must meet a mandated post certification requirement, which includes attaining a total of 90 credit hours during the campaign semester and receiving a minimum grade point average of 2.5 overall.

The 2009-2010 student elects, Jennifer C. Williams and Danny Glover fell short.

"I am extremely apologetic to the student body that [voted for] me," said senior psychology major and SGA President elect Jennifer Williams from Memphis.

Williams missed the requirement by one credit hour. Beginning with 15 credit hours for the spring semester, Williams explained that her heavy course load and activeness on campus led her to drop an online class.

This left her with 13 credit hours vs. the original 15. Williams also admitted failing one of the remaining classes during the semester, expunging her, otherwise, outstanding GPA.

"The grade is one I believe I did not earn," Williams said. "However, this particular professor only teaches this course and it is a requirement for graduation.

Knowing I have to re-take the course, I decided to appeal the administrative decision rather than the grade itself," she continued.

An appeal process on behalf of both parties has been underway. Glover persistently tried to appeal Contemporary Mathematics Professor Kenneth Daniels failing grade, however, to no avail. Glover also alluded that he knew several students who failed considerably as well.

With that conclusion, Glover inquired whether it was his inability to understand the material or a lack of efficient teaching.

This is truly sad but as a former SGA Vice President, to my understanding, if candidates ran against these individuals than they usually assume the posts of the elected. (Continued…)

I'm really up set. I am upset because these are two people that I truly looked up to and to me it seems as though when Williams said it was not fair or professional really upset me because there is really no excuse. (Continued…)

Honestly, I'm more than disappointed in these two whom I know personally. Both Danny and Jennifer have been close associates of mine since they began at TSU and I expect nothing but the best from them. (Continued…)

I am glad that both of these students are honest about the situation. I know both to be bright students regardless of the documentation. It is unfortunate however that they have put so much hard work into their campaigns. (Continued…)

It is irresponsible of the Meter to let students blame faculty, especially by name, without the Meter following up with the "accused" faculty member. Maybe the teachers were to blame, maybe the students were to blame, who knows as we only get one side of the story? Usually a low GPA is not the result of 1 bad grade, but many bad grades (4 As & 1 F =3. (Continued…)

Perhaps those running for office should focus more on academics instead of pledging Frats or Sororities...this has been the problem with TSU's SGA for years now. (Continued…)

Looks like someone was to busy pledging and not taking care of their academics....which is what college is all about people. TSU need effective leaders. (Continued…)

Dito bustapha...once again TSU "Leaders" are below average. Perhaps they were more focused on pledging than taking care of their businsess of getting an education. (Continued…)

I do agree that names of faculty should not be mentioned in articles unless they have been found at fault after investigation by the university. However, in this case I see no problem with a faculty members name being mentioned. (Continued…)
