TSU's National Alumni Association has launched its "Million Dollar Challenge", a charge to increase alumni giving and raise at least one million dollars by 2012.

Additionally, TSU's University Relations and Development division implemented the "2012 Change for Change" campaign, an effort to increase the amount of faculty and staff philanthropic dollars.

Last year, the annual giving fund brought in more than $2 million from about 1,500 donors.

Shereitte C. Stokes, vice president for University Relations and Development, helped promote the financially successful initiative as a means to bring more money into TSU and its students.

For the 2009 - 2010 academic school year, the university is aiming to increase the number of donating alumni to 2,000 by June 30 in an effort to bring in $4.5 million.

Donors who contribute at least a $1,000 are invited to join the President's Society Club.

Each donor receives a Progress & Promise President's Report, University public relations bulletin entitled "The Blue Notes" and a foundation report of the University.
The campaign's goal is to make more funds available to students who have trouble meeting the growing financial

responsibilities of college and gain new donors by getting them involved in making contributions.

"(Establishing) a basic form of fundraising, can promote more frequent giving," Stokes said. "The starting amounts are what would typically be given by current students and by starting small, we can get a lot accomplished."

By establishing the Change for Change campaign, students are not only helped but alumni who have not given to TSU can begin.

"People give to what they are familiar with," Stokes said. "(Once) someone begins donating to a common cause, they become comfortable with (it)."

Stokes also said TSU was hoping to maintain the relationship with previous donors.

"We are no longer state supported so this increase in contributions is a result of staff and faculty team leaders," he said.

"Alumni have a clear understanding of the importance of giving back to their Alma Mater."

The school has about 32,000 alumni, and the goal is to get about 37 percent of them, roughly 12,000 alumni, to donate.

To achieve the $4.5 million goal, Change for Change will use a relatively small amount of money per donor to build towards the ultimate multi-million dollar goal.

The plan is to ask donors to give $20.12 each month in the year 2012.

"It is up to the university to make sure it has the funds to support itself and students," said Betsy Jackson, the Executive Director for the TSU Foundation.

Students like Tiashi Greer appreciate the new initiatives in place, but feel as though some alumni are not doing all they can do.

"I feel that even though there are alumni who give back to the school, they could probably do more," said Greer, a junior biology major from Nashville. •
