University officials released a Nov. 4 crime alert to students, faculty and staff concerning a Nov. 3 brawl and related Nov. 2 robbery on campus. TSU Police said the incident is being investigated as an aggravated assault.

Following a call to Metro-Nashville Police alleging that shots had been fired on campus, authorities quickly rushed to the scene, determining a group of students had assaulted one of two black males suspected of committing a robbery in the FPCC the previous night.

No one was severely injured in the approximately 2:30 p.m. fight near Watson and Clement halls, although the assault victim was transported via ambulance to an area hospital.

Witnesses confirmed the victim was TSU student Will Smith, whose mother is a university employee, Tracey Harris-an administrative assistant for the educational administration department.

The students chased the two men to the scene, where Smith had attempted to escape by jumping into the open window of a TSU Police squad car. The students pulled the victim out of the car and began beating him until authorities had arrived, spectators said.

A search of the area by Metro Police and TSU Police did not produce any evidence of a shooting or a weapon, the alert said. No weapons were found at the scene or on any individuals.

A text message describing the robbery had been distributed late Monday and encouraged students to contact the department if they knew any details.

The Nov. 4 crime alert explained TSU Police had been contacted after students had indicated an individual matching the description of the robbery suspects were in the FPCC and the police were needed.

Metro Police apprehended the other of the suspects, though an arrest has not been made at this time.
